Ashley’s DigitalSpy Interview
Last week, DigitalSpy added this interview online with Ashley following the finale of the ITV his show, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, in the show Ashley plays Bambi a beautiful, loveable and call girl who Belle took under her wing in season two.
So, Duncan got the boot, Bambi and Byron got wed, and Belle and Ben are… still dancing around each other. It’s been an eventful series of Secret Diary! What next for London’s finest call girls? Are they prepared to go for round four? And if so, will Belle and Ben give it a shot? Eager for more info following tonight’s dramatic finale, we caught up with Ashley ‘Bambi’ Madekwe for a debrief.
Do you think that Bambi and Byron were a good match?
“I think they are – they’re both really in love and they have this sweet vulnerability and complement each other really well. It was a whirlwind romance – from hiring to marriage in a month maybe!”What was it like playing that side of her?
“It was really nice. It’s nice to show that side of the call girl business too. Obviously you do get me and Billie having clients but it’s always more interesting when you see them doing other things.”It must have been really tough kissing David Dawson all day…
“Really difficult! Actually, he’s my friend and we went to drama school together so it was just like being back at drama school. Going to rehearsals was so much fun and we were already further ahead than when you’re meeting someone for the first time because you know what it’s like at drama school – everyone knows everyone’s business and you all roll around on the floor all day pretending to be trees so you’re already really close!”How do you feel filming sex scenes?
“It’s definitely not the best part of the day – it’s always uncomfortable. You’re half-naked with somebody you don’t know. I was really lucky this year that all my sex scenes were with David who I already had that familiarity with. People who enjoy them are weird, I think!”Would you agree that Billie has become the face of prostitution?
“I definitely haven’t and I couldn’t possibly say she has or she’d kill me!”Do you think Belle and Ben are meant to be together?
“I don’t know. I get asked that a lot and I don’t know if it would ever work. You know when you have a relationship with someone and you wake up, it’s harder to go back. The cracks are always going to be there. [When Ben left her on the plane] I saw Billie’s reaction to the letter – I loved what she did because she made it really ambiguous.”If you get a fourth season do you think they’ll give it a go?
“I think they’d have to give it a go but I bet it wouldn’t be successful.”Is a fourth run likely?
“I don’t know. We haven’t really spoken about a fourth season yet. I think the producers all really love it and it’s like their baby. They definitely believe in it and the cast enjoy doing it so if it worked out we’d probably all be there.”When we spoke to Billie recently, she said she isn’t sure there are any more stories to tell. Do you agree?
“I think if it does continue it would have to veer even further away from the client and prostitute relationship. There’s only so many times we can watch Billie have weird sex with weird men! In order for the show to continue to be interesting and fresh it would have to delve deeper into her life and away from the business. I think that’s where the real Belle de Jour went eventually.”When you were shooting the final episode of series three were you thinking ‘this could be the end’?
“Well we don’t shoot in sequence so probably not – it probably didn’t occur to me! I think it was upbeat and open ended enough that people will be satisfied if that’s the end and happy if it’s not.”Where do you see Bambi’s story taking her if you come back next year?
“I think I’d like to see her and Byron still together and I’d love it if Bambi became a madam! She could put Stephanie out on the game! I think her job is definitely going to have to have some sort of implication on her relationship with Byron eventually – no matter how fine he is with it.” [Source]
I’ve neglected to update the main page with the finale screencaps because I really didn’t want the season to end. I’ve enjoyed this one so much and have had a fun time watching them all Monday night on Showtime. I thought it was really cool in the interview to find out that Ashley & David (Byron) are friends knew each other prior to David being casted. They have an awesome relationship on-screen and now I can see why. I really hope we have another season if everyopne is game to com back and film it.
